Coasteering Photography

What do you do on a cold windy December day in Swanage? Go take pictures of course. What better place to go than Peveril Point, Coasteering photography it is.

The intention was to take pictures of the ledges being smashed by the sea. Capturing the waves erupting into spray and some long exposure pictures to give the ledges at Peveril point some magic but a small group of people coasteering changed all that.

Upon arrival, the coasteering group were playing on the North ledge. I took up camp to capture images on the south ledge until invaded.

Quick change of plans the Dorset or Jurassic Coast Pictures were out of the window and it would be more of an event photography than seascape situation.

Astro Photography Dorset, St Aldhelms Chapel Milky Way

This Astrophotograph of the Milky Way was taken at St Aldhelms Chapel at St Aldhelms Head. St Aldhelms Head is located near Worth Matravers in Dorset.

This image is 5 landscape orientated images stitched together.

August evening saw a trip out to St Aldhelms head to capture the chapel with the intention of a quick walk along the coastal path to capture the Milky Way again from the cove of Chapmans Pool and possibly another location.

After this little capture I started the walk ‘Oh the Steps’ I forgot about the steps.

Bumping into 3 other local photographers at the descent to Chapmans Pool who were capturing the Milky Way. I decided not to wander down through their shot with my light so moved elsewhere.

What is St Aldhelm’s Chapel?

In my view its a fantastic location for astrophotography but it is a Norman chapel on St Aldhelm’s Head in the parish of Worth Matravers, Swanage, Dorset. This monument is a Grade I listed building that is worth a visit by day or night.

The small square stone chapel is situated within a small circular earthwork, which some suspect may be the remains of a pre-Conquest Christian enclosure.

Event Photography Swanage Carnival Wheelbarrow Race

Event Photography Swanage Carnival. The Swanage Carnival is a highlight of the town’s calendar. We have all the festivals but the Swanage Carnival is the peak. The ‘heat wave’ had past for the procession day. Rain and wind. That did not stop the visitors or locals coming out to see the people and floats taking part.

The Wheel Barrow Race is possibly the second peak to the week of fun. Entrants in fancy dress with wheelbarrows that have to run around the town and have a drink. What could possibly happen?

The event was ready and all the entrants in fancy dress all I needed to do was to arrive and press a button. With the Carnival Wheel Barrow Race going around the town there are several locations to try and capture all the entrants to the wheelbarrow race. Shooting from the triangle near the Swan Pub I was able to snap away as the wheelbarrows came up Institute road. When passed a quick move over the road and catch them again stopping for a drink at the Swan. Short walk to the seafront and catch them racing for the finish line.

Great to see Alan from Old Harry Camper Company fellow crewmember on the Swanage Lifeboat taking part in the 2018 wheelbarrow race.

Catching an event like this is just the start. Having to go through 100’s of pictures to sift out the good ones takes a little while so jump over to the gallery of images from the Swanage Carnival Wheelbarrow Race and check them out.

Sunrise Old Harry Rocks Swanage Dorset. Fantastic location to stand and see the sunrise in fact it is a fantastic location full stop. Out on the chalk headland with views of Poole, Bournemouth and the Isle of Wight.

Long before the sun reaches the horizon to peak its nose over the colours start to brighten the sky. Streaks of orange and gold interspersed with the wisps of clouds. The promise of a fantastic summers day in Dorset. The colours contrasting to the white of the chalk cliffs that form Old Harry Rocks here in Swanage.

Being a Dorset Photographer fantastic sunrises on the wonderful coast are very accessible. Simply means an early alarm and and a short trip or even walk. The views are on our door step. This picture is taken at the famous Old Harry Rocks Swanage looking towards Poole and Bournemouth.

Finding Old Harry Rocks Swanage

Old Harry Rocks is a stack of chalk rocks at the end of the headland that separates Swanage Bay and Studland beach. The charted location for Old Harry Rocks is actually Handfast Point. The headland is reached with a simple walk from either location . From Studland side of Ballard Down there is a footpath from the South Beach car park near the Bankes Arms public house all the way out making Old Harry Rocks very accessible. If setting out to walk to Handfast Point from Swanage then you can stroll along the beach until you pick up the footpath. This route takes you past Ballard point before you reach Old Harry Rocks also passing the Pinnacle, The pinnacle is another stack midway between the two points.

Please Note: If you do go out to cliff tops take care. Cliffs are dangerous and people do fall and die every year. Silly mistakes near the edge or rocks giving way. Please give extra care and attention when on the coast at all times.

RNLI College Sunset Holes Bay Dorset

RNLI College Sunset. Short break staying at the RNLI College because I was attending a mechanics course on the Shannon Lifeboat. The type of lifeboat that is stationed in Swanage. The course saw us all sat in a hot boat on the bank holiday Monday. The boat never left the moorings while we were learning all about the nuts, bolts and shinny bits. Monday evening the reward. After a long hot day the sun started to drop down across Holes Bay. The sun glowing as a huge orange ball drifting in the sky. The orange glow seeped from the sun to give a strong orange glow across the sky before the pink wisps of cloud arrived.

With stunning views to capture like this from the RNLI College bar balcony and most of the rooms who would want to be anywhere else at sunset.

Taken with my trusty Nikon D750.

Milky Way Selfie Peveril Point Swanage.

Sometimes photographers can be too serious. All in a row, cameras on a tripod looking at the sunset through a camera but missing the event. The same can be true of any photographic trip. Its always good to take a step back and take in the image of what you are there to actually capture. Especially true of the Milky Way. The scale of the stars just can’t be perceived even through a lens at 20 mm.

With the darkness at Peveril point and some time for the eyes to adjust more stars start to appear. Soon after arrival I knew that a single shot would not capture the whole of the arch. I just had to stand and admire mother nature.

Clavell Tower Kimmeridge Sunset. We take pictures of the sunsets and enjoy them but every so often one comes along that blows all the others away.

The location on the cliff by Clavell Tower at Kimmeridge bay is spectacular at the best of times but on Saturday night WOW!!

An overcast day that had no intention of giving up a sunset finaly relented at the last moment and gave us one of the best for a long time. As the sun dropped down behind the hills it set the the sky on fire…

This is my humble attempt to capture such a stunning event. I know there have been many others posted so maybe just one more sunset from Saturday will not do any harm.

Chapman’s Pool Sunset

Chapman’s Pool Sunset. You will never tire of the view from high above Chapman’s Pool at sunset.Just a short easy walk from the car park to such a fantastic location. Last nights sunset saw the sky glowing orange as the sun sank down towards the hill of the Jurassic Coast. The gentle breeze just putting a few ripples onto the sea.

As a Dorset Photographer I am sure the pleasure is all mine. To be able to walk out of an evening and witness a Chapman’s Pool Sunset.

Rusty Chain. No Sunset. No Waves. No clouds just grey. Out with camera and had a play with some rusty chain that was lying on the slip at Kimmeridge. Always good to do something a little different when out with a camera.

Snowday Swanage War Memorial

Called the “Beast From The East 2” we saw a second snow shower in as many weeks. Missing out any chance last time of getting about with the car snowed in I was determined to try again. Not knowing how things would be when the alarm went off I had several plans of places to visit. Keeping it local I started my morning up at the War Memorial. Great to arrive with the sun not over the horizon and no footprints to ruin the picture. It was clear that the sun was never going to make an appearance even though it had been booked. The thick grey clouds still producing small flurries of snow was going make sure the sun was not coming to the party.
